Adam Austin was a comic writer who worked at Timely Comics. After his idea for a character named Masked Marvel was scrapped, he was fired and began searching for new employment.
During the SHIELD Civil War a HYDRA faction managed to steal one of the prototype's of the Tesseract-Cosmic Enhanced gauntlets. A SHIELD Team led by Clay Quartermain managed to intercept the HYDRA faction and the two sides fought each other.
That day Adam discovered the conflict and tried his best to get around it. He managed to find the crashed HYDRA truck which contained the abandoned cargo. Adam then put on the gauntlets and immediately after he obtained super powers. He used his new abilities to stop HYDRA and assist SHIELD. After the conflict, Clay offered Adam a job as a member of the Secret Warriors, where he assumed the title of his comic book character Masked Marvel.
